rant

Another celebrity died at the weekend. Legendary singer Whitney Houston was found dead in her hotel on Saturday.

Log onto to any social media site and you will see many statuses/tweets regarding her death. Most will be a simple “R.I.P Whitney Houston”, others may have a little message, saying how much they enjoyed her music and so forth, but for every message like the above, you will find an equal amount of updates somewhat attacking her and her death, and it appears to happen every time a celebrity dies.

One thing that gets on my nerves are the pictures or statuses stating something such as
“1 person dies, 100 million cry - 1 Million people die in africa, no one cries’

Don’t get me wrong, it’s terrible that so many people in 3rd world countries and war torn parts of the world die on a daily basis, sickening really. But the comment in question seems far to vague and a cheap comment. Whitney Houston was in the public eye, and her death came as a shock to most of the world, regardless of her past substance abuse. Simply put, this is why so many people will ‘cry’ about her death. Someone who may people would of liked and admired suddenly is gone, and it’s bound to cause a reaction. It will be front page news, not for long though. It’s how the news cycle works, it’s how the media works.

By no means am I saying that her or any celebrity’s death is more important that situations where millions die annually, because there not, but you already knew that. We all know about the millions that die all over the world and wish there was something that we could do to fix it and wish that it never happened. But as bad as it sounds, whilst it is shocking in this day and time, it’s not shocking as it sadly has become something that is ongoing and unfortunately not going to change any time soon, though I wish it would. I also guarantee that these people who complain about the amount of posts about a celeb death compared to children dying in countries suffering from famine don’t post a status about the latter ever.

Another thing that annoys me a lot is how people will write

“Who cares about Whitney Houston, she was a druggie and deserved it”

Who is that person to say someone deserved death. No one deserves to die, and there’s no way you can say that about someone without knowing the person. I doubt any of these keyboard warriors have ever been put in a position like Houston or Amy Winehouse. Sudden fame, pressure, insecurities. No one really knows what was going through their heads and making them go down the road of alcohol and drugs. They made a choice which ultimately lead to their downfall, but that doesn’t give anyone the right to judge, and by no means gives any one the right to say they deserved their death. I read a comment on a status earlier that said in regards to Houston

“She had millions, she could of got help at any time but wouldn’t”

I’m not a drug addict, I’ve never been in a position where someone close to me is trapped in a drug addiction, but I’m aware that drug addiction isn’t just something that can be sorted by paying a huge fee to a rehab clinic and then hey, your fine now. If that was the case don’t you think that they would want to do it. Most do, like most smokers want to quit, but they can’t because they are addicted, and an addiction is not easy to kick. Just ask any smoker, drug user, gambler, alcoholic. You can throw your money at every rehab clinic in the world, but that wont cure the problem, there are so many other factors that have to be taken into account. Yeah, some have succeeded, Russel Brand comes to mine, but for every success, there is likely to be a failure. The thing is, half the smart and edgy  people who wrote these status’ wouldn’t of said the same thing regarding Kurt Cobain’s death should they of been alive at the time of his death or even now, but his suicide had a lot to do with his drug addiction.(Not attacking Cobain, Nirvana are on of my all time favourite bands As I said in my status, any joke about Ryan Dunn was seen as bang out of order, but he died of drink driving.)

Just seems pathetic to write statuses which have no real thought, logic and more importantly need, just to see a red icon appear in the top right of your facebook page.

Again, I’ve tried writing something that’s clear but I realise I may have failed in that point, I’ve got to stop writing rants about things that are quite hard to transcribe to paper and not make you seem as a smart arse/heartless/cunt etc.

Rant Over, fuck off
