Don't Watch The Ting

Tim. 21. London/Southampton.

Doing Magazine Journalism + Feature Writing at Southampton Solent University. I don't even want to be a journalist really.

It seems that whenever  I log on to tumblr, if I haven’t been distracted by a beautiful bitch, I seem to be reading about something regarding hardcore.

I like hardcore, I’ve liked hardcore since I first ever heard Talk Is Cheap by Comeback Kid (sorry if I’ve lost cool points for that). Most of my favourite bands are “hardcore” bands. But by no means am I  a hardcore kid.

I don’t get this whole HC  community half the time. I’m not slagging of the HC community in any way or form, If anything, I admire the fact that there is this scene where people meet each other at shows, become good friends, and travel round the country to see shows. Believe it or not if you know me, I somewhat admire the whole straight edge side of it, how again, theres this camaraderie amongst friends over what is such a simple thing of not drinking or taking drugs (though I can’t stand people who preach it and look down on anyone who does drink.)

What I really don’t get is all the apparent bull shit that comes with it.

“Your not Hardcore because you didn’t come to see this band at this community centre in (instert shit hole)”

“Your not hardcore because you don’t/do wear certain clothes”

“Your not hardcore because you didn’t buy such bands 2 track cassette tape in 2007 and you’ve only heard there latest release, which is the best thing ever, but shit because it’s popular.”

there’s various other examples I could use but I can’t be bothered. I just don’t get why if someone has gone to a show or started to listen to and love a band that there are certain people who feel that they are above everyone else because they were there first. At the end of the day, genuine people get into this “scene” because there was something about the bands music that drew them in, and therefore it doesn’t matter if your dressed head to toe in supreme, carhaart or any other current must have street wear item or someone who has just worn what they felt like that day, no one has the right to think they are above them.

Bit off the point, but the amount of dirty looks me and my mates get at gigs because 9/10 we will be pretty pissed makes me laugh. If theres a bar at the venue and I feel like I want a drink or 10, I will. As long as I haven’t done anything to offend you directly, you can fuck off. You can’t judge me because I like a pint, and that’s the same as I can’t judge you because you don’t and would prefer soya milk. But again that’s a different matter.

Basically to summarise, I don’t get why there is so much crap and apparent politics in the “hardcore” scene, just listen to the music and have fun in what way you see fit. Who gives a fuck if someone was looking at you dodgy, or you don’t like what so and so is wearing. Just watch the bands you paid to see, do your silly dancing ( i will never understand that and will always find it baffling) and go home happy.

I realise I’ve rambled a bit, but I’m shattered. I realise as well that I may have got everything I’ve written wrong, which will furthermore prove to me that I don’t ‘get it”. I also am aware that I may of contradicted myself, as my lecturers keep saying I do that in most pieces I write. I felt like going on a rant, I was told at uni today I should blog a lot more so what nothing better than to go on a little rant.

fuck off
